We don't pay to play.

A recent conversation with some other local craft brewery owners, and another with a local bar manager, is the inspiration for this post. We at SDBC believe that if you play by the rules, treat people with respect, make good beer, and support your community, it's good for all. When you bend or break the rules, treat others unfairly, then what does that say about your business? Some brief context. Pay to play or pay for play has been a common, albeit illegal practice in many businesses, including the beer industry. Just Google Pay to Play and beer, and you'll see many examples come up. Make no mistake, it also happens here in Canada. The macro breweries have done it...

Our story on the radio

CBC Ottawa Morning stopped by wanting to hear our story. While we think it's kinda cool, we were super stoked to find that they did as well. Have a listen as we cover our humble beginnings, following our dreams, being the first brewery in Orléans, and how many cucumbers it takes to make a wheat beer.

And....we're open!

Well folks, it's been a long journey but we finally made it to doors being open and beer being sold! Last weekend was our official opening (though not a 'grand' opening as of yet. That date is coming soon). So far, tremendous support from the community, positive reviews, and overall just a fantastic vibe in the tap room. We've had friends and family come by to clean, can, and serve. What other industry loans the use of ingredients or equipment when you're in a pinch? It really takes a community to build one. Promise...

In beer making, I would argue that water is the most essential ingredient – without it, there is no product. And we are seeing recent pictures and videos just how powerful water truly is. For us, our brewery is just on the other side of the highway from Petrie Island, which has completely disappeared under the Ottawa River, so we are largely unaffected. But many friends are affected, from Rockland to Constance Bay, so if you hear...

Brewery update – equipment is coming home (soon)

We’ve been meaning to do a post about the brewery, but even with three of us holding down our full-time gigs AND trying to start a new business, it’s amazing how quickly time gets away from you. The idea was to document our journey in a blog-type format, in part to keep a journal of sorts so that we can look back in several years’ time and laugh over pints at the struggle, the nonsense, red tape, jumping hoops and a lot of learning on the fly. The other reason was to give up-and-coming would-be breweries a glimpse of how we got started and help them avoid some of the issues and pitfalls we encountered, and possibly give them a...
